DALLAS, TEXAS (November 20, 2009) - Since 2005, the annual City Lights spectacular has signaled the start of the holiday season in Downtown Dallas. For the 2009 City Lights, the City of Dallas needed something special to celebrate the new Main Street Garden, a full city block park in the heart of downtown. Excitement Technologies Group's founder and CEO, Kelly Sticksel, had the perfect solution in mind: a state-of-the-art holiday tree.
The metal sculpted holiday tree stands 65 feet tall, with a five foot rotating illuminant star adorning its crown. It is strung with 10,000 feet of eco-friendly LED lights from top to bottom. Adorning the tree are several metal ornaments designed by Corgan Media Lab, the largest of which are four feet tall. The tree was sculpted and welded by the City of Dallas Park Department welding shop. The metal frame architecture was designed by Thomas Balsley, the lead designer and landscape architect of Main Street Garden. Holly Metal Fabricators provided a significant portion of the metal as well as fabrication labor of the ornaments. ETG's staff worked around the clock for weeks preparing and assembling the tree before it was moved to its final location at Main Street Garden. Once there, a special crane was brought in to complete the final erection of the tree. ETG provided countless hours of labor, materials, construction management and final production to the project. Taking the concept to the next level, the DMX controlled lights on the holiday tree perform one of selection of custom choreographed shows every fifteen minutes. The shows were designed by world renowned lighting designer Norm Schwab of Lightswitch, the company behind the lights at Millennium Park. The 2500 watt sound system providing the audio for the shows was furnished by Showtech Productions.
The holiday tree was unveiled at a special event on November 20, 2009 by none other than Santa Claus himself. Santa, perched high atop a crane, used his magic (with a little help from ETG pyro partner StarS Productions) to send a burst of green-friendly energy to illuminate the tree. As the tree came to life, it began a choreographed show of dancing light up, down and around the 65-foot metal masterpiece. Even Santa was impressed &This has to be the brightest, biggest tree I've ever seen...This will surely be bright enough to light up Dallas all through the season!"
The Tree's construction and display, spearheaded by DOWNTOWNDALLAS, was a collective effort of ETG and several other Dallas area businesses, the City of Dallas and members of the Downtown community
who wished to contribute to this spectacular icon as a civic venture...making it truly a priceless gift to the city.
